Trial starting in West Tawakoni dispute

Mayor suing City Council member

GREENVILLE — Early voting starts next week in an election to determine two seats on the West Tawakoni City Council.

Testimony starts today in a civil trial involving two of the candidates running in the election.

A jury was seated Monday, while opening arguments and the start of testimony in the trial between Pete Yoho, the current mayor of West Tawakoni, and City Council member Carol Solomon are scheduled at 10 a.m. today in the 196th District Court

Yoho and Laura Beckett are in the race for Place 2 on the West Tawakoni City Council. Solomon is unopposed in seeking the Place 4 spot. Early voting begins Monday for the November 6 election.

Yoho, who is currently the mayor of West Tawakoni, City Administrator Cloy Richards and  West Tawakoni Maintenance Supervisor Gary Lamont Jenkins filed suit in October 2010 against Solomon, seeking her removal from the Council due to allegations of misconduct.

Richard and Jenkins later filed an order of non-suit and were dropped from the case, while Yoho continued with the suit.

In return, Solomon filed a counter claim against Yoho, alleging claims of defamation and malicious persecution.

Yoho’s original suit claimed Solomon and her husband Richard used city employees and equipment to remove a tree stump from their property, replace a drain culvert and grade the driveway to their residence in late May or early June 2010, without compensating the city.

Solomon has denied the allegations.
