GEUS power plant project humming along
GREENVILLE — One of the wettest Octobers in recent memory didn’t help, but officials with GEUS say the local electric utility system’s engine power plant project is still on schedule.
GEUS Consumer Services Manager Jimmy Dickey said the site in far north Greenville recorded 13 inches of rain last month.
“That presented some real challenges,” Dickey said. Work crews began pouring the main foundation for the plant last week.
“Once that is completed, they will begin raising the building,” he added.
The GEUS board voted last month to issue up to $20 million in bonds to pay for the 25 megawatt (MW) plant, which is being built adjacent to the current GEUS Steam Plant. When completed, the facility will be used primarily to provide electricity during times of peak local demand, at a lower cost than GEUS is now paying. The new plant will raise GEUS’ total available generation from the current 133 MW to 158 MW.
Finland-based Wärtsilä has been selected to provide the generation and, as of last week, the twin generators were still in the company’s plant overseas, being prepped for the trip across the ocean. Once they arrive in Houston early next year, they will be shipped to Greenville.
“We hope to be producing power through those engines as early as June 2010,” Dickey said.
