Bond reduction denied in child injury case

Howard charged with injuring two infants last summer

Quinlan — A state district judge has denied a reduction in bond for a  Quinlan man, charged with seriously injuring two infant children during a family violence incident in July of last year.

A new trial date was also set Thursday for James Henry Howard Jr.

Howard, 27, was indicted by the Hunt County grand jury on two counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. Howard has pleaded not guilty.

Howard was arrested on the indictments on Oct. 8, 2012 and remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond on each charge.

Judge Richard A. Beacom Thursday denied a reduction in the bonds and set a tentative trial date in the case for April 8.

On July 10, 2012 Howard was alleged to have assaulted two boys who were less than four months old, who were members of Howard’s household, by squeezing each of the children’s chests and causing rib fractures. Howard was also alleged to have created bruising on the victims and/or to have beaten them “with an object unknown to the grand jury.”

Howard was previously convicted and sentenced to state jail in connection with a 2004 burglary of a vehicle.

Each of the injury to a child charges are first degree felonies, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
