Filing begins for council election

GREENVILLE — A familiar face has thrown his hat in the ring in the race for the Greenville City Council.

Wednesday was the first day of filing for the May municipal election.

Dan Perkins filed seeking re-election to the Place 1 seat on the Council.

The election is scheduled for May 11 and the Council has until March 1, 2013 to officially call for the election.

Places 1 and 2 on the Council will be decided. Dr. Joe Perks serves in Place 2. Both are completing their first term on the Council and are therefore eligible to run again.

Perks has not formally announced whether he intends to seek reelection.

Tyson Cox, a partner of Coxcrete, Inc., a concrete pumping business he co-owns with his brother, Tony, announced Wednesday he would also be seeking the Place 1 seat, but had not filed as of the evening.

Candidate packets are available in the City Secretary’s Office at 2821 Washington Street.

March 1 is also the last day to file for a spot on the ballot.

April 11 is the last day to register to vote for the election, with early voting scheduled April 29-May 7.

The Council may also decide to also call for one or more other items to be added to the May ballot; including the proposed new YMCA/event center, the road construction package or recommendations for changes to the Greenville City Charter.
