Parkway slated to open for traffic

GREENVILLE — Motorists are about to have a new way to get to Greenville High School or to Paris Junior College in Greenville.

Monty Stratton Parkway, between Interstate 30 and Lions Lair Road, is scheduled to officially open for traffic Wednesday morning.

Although not posted, the speed limit under state law automatically will be 30 mph. Director of Public Works Massoud Ebrahim said he will immediately begin a traffic study to determine the final speed limit to be posted.

The parkway is two concrete lanes with a raised median and open ditches on either side between the interstate and Lions Lair Road. A sidewalk runs along one side of the roadway and two crossovers were included under the project.

Ground was broken in May of last year, and the L.H. Lacy Company is the contractor on the project.

If the area does develop as expected, the parkway can be expanded to the originally planned four lanes, with a bike trail.

In the 1930s, Stratton (1912-1982) was a starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, who was born in the Wagner community but lived for years in Greenville. Stratton lost his right leg in a hunting accident in 1938, but went on to make a successful comeback, winning 18 games with the Class-C Sherman Twins of the East Texas League.

Stratton was immortalized in a movie, “The Monty Stratton Story” which had its premier in Greenville 63 years ago, when the city also celebrated Monty Stratton Day.
