Eight arrests reported in county overnight

Aside from the fireworks and scattered reports of people shooting firearms into the air, local law enforcement is reporting a rather subdued New Year’s Eve celebration in the county.

“I was out there until 3 a.m. and it was relatively quiet,” said Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks, adding he was surprised at the lack of activity. “We had eight people put in jail, mainly on alcohol-related charges. It was really quiet.”

The Greenville Police Department had not released any reports of any significant activity as of noon Tuesday, although there were multiple reports of fireworks and occasional gunfire during the early morning hours.

The use of all fireworks are prohibited inside Greenville and all of the incorporated cities in Hunt County, but they are allowed in the unincorporated areas. Violators can be cited to appear in court and face stiff fines for each offense.

Officers with the Commerce and Greenville Police Departments, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety were out in force for New Year’s Eve, searching for drunk drivers and for revelers celebrating using fireworks or gunfire.

There were no immediate reports of arrests for fireworks or the use of weapons.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported there were no fatality accidents in Hunt County overnight.
