Fishing Friday, Juneteenth to be celebrated same day
GREENVILLE — One of Greenville’s most popular summer events for area youth will be conducted this year in conjunction with a celebration of freedom.
Fishing Friday and the local observance of Juneteenth are both scheduled for Graham Park. 800 Walnut Street on Friday, June 19. The annual Swimming Friday at the Ja-Lu Pool will be held the next Friday, June 26.
The Greenville Police Department along with the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association are hosting the 13th Annual David Dickson Memorial Fishing Friday between 9 a.m. and noon June 19.
Hundreds of children typically converge on the park each summer, to meet local public servants and to enjoy a morning of fishing, food and fun. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, soldiers and elected officials will be on hand to fish with the children. Police vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, military vehicles and a helicopter will also be on display. The Greenville Police Department will provide fishing equipment and a hot dog lunch.
Fishing Friday began 13 years ago as part of the Greenville Police Department's award winning Summer of Safety Program.
The Greenville NAACP and the Corporation for Cultural Diversity are inviting everyone to Greenville’s celebration of Juneteenth, between noon and 6:30 p.m. June 19. The free event is scheduled to include wellness checks, team sports, fellowship sessions, a live DJ and more. Juneteenth is the commemoration of June 19, 1865, when the enslaved in Galveston received word of their freedom.
The Summer of Safety Program also includes Swimming Friday on Friday, June 26, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Ja-Lu Pool. Swimming Friday is free to all area children and snacks are provided.
Local businesses that support these programs include the Hunt Regional Medical Center, the Greenville Fire-Rescue Department, the W. Walworth Harrison Public Library, the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department, American Medical Response, Texas LifeStar and many others.
