Work to begin on new GEUS consumer service center
GREENVILLE — About a year from now customers of GEUS, the local electric utility system, will have a new downtown location where they can pay their bills.
Work is about to begin on a project to transform the former United States Post Office building at 2810 Wesley Street into a consumer service center for GEUS.
In July, the GEUS board of trustees authorized General Manager David McCalla to execute an agreement with an intent to purchase the building for $550,000.
GEUS Consumer Services Manager Jimmy Dickey said the utility was scheduled last week to receive bids from contractors seeking to remove the asbestos insulation from inside the building.
“It will be about 30 to 40 days to get the asbestos out,” Dickey said.
The Postal Service ceased operations at the structure in October 2006 over considerations regarding asbestos contamination.
Environmental studies leading up to the purchase estimated the asbestos abatement costs to be approximately $169,000.
“After that, we will be looking for an architect and an interior design specialist,” Dickey said.
The complete renovation is expected to include the addition of a drive-through lane for paying bills.
A total of $1.32 million was budgeted for the project in this year’s GEUS budget.
“We anticipate the project will be complete in either the late summer or early fall of 2009,” Dickey said.
The utility currently has two locations where customers can pay their bills, in the GEUS Consumer Service Center at 6000 Joe Ramsey Boulevard and inside the Municipal Building at 2821 Washington Street. Customer service facilities will eventually be closed at those locations once renovations are complete at the new site. The drop box location at 6000 Joe Ramsey will remain active with payments processed daily.
