Friends remember county GOP leader
He was known as a tireless worker for Republican Party causes in Hunt County and as an avid fan of genealogy.
But sometimes Bill Hocutt of Celeste was known as “Uncle Hiram.”
Hocutt, the chairman of the Hunt County Republican Party, passed away Thursday at his residence. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today in the Lynch Funeral Home chapel.
Hocutt took the reigns of the local GOP earlier this year, succeeding Mickey Mixson. Mixson sent an e-mail informing party faithful of Hocutt’s passing and praising his friend.
“Bill has been one of the main stays in the Hunt County Republican Party for the last ten plus years,” Mixson wrote. “Though he was not always in the forefront you always knew where Bill stood. If you did not always agree with him he was willing to listen to your point of view. I was pleased to work with Bill as an Election Judge, Precinct Chairman, GOP Club President. Bill was always the one you could count on going the extra mile to gain the victory. If you had a task that needed to be accomplished contact Bill. If he could not do it, he always had the right person in mind that would see it through. Bill had a way of ruffling feathers now and then but, it made you think and seek more information. I for will greatly miss the times of fellowship, times of seeking solutions to the party problems, and just being around him.”
Hocutt kept blogs, under the alias of “Uncle Hiram”; one of which gave his thoughts on life in general, politics and living in Celeste, where he had lived since 1994, which included a subhead of “My Thoughts, My Opinions, My Attitude, You dont like it? Tell it to Nancy Pelosi cause I dont care!”
He also maintained a web site known as “Uncle Hiram’s Adventures in Genealogy” which included his biography.
