GREENVILLE — According to one state agency, Hunt County is about to undergo a major boom in population, not to mention potential traffic congestion and pollution.
In face the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) believes Hunt County could become “urbanized” in about two decades.
The influx of people means planning needs to start right away for what is expected to happen between now and 2030. As such, the NCTCOG has scheduled a public meeting in Greenville Monday night to begin the planning process.
The meeting, to discuss the expansion of its Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA) boundary, is scheduled 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center, 5501 South Highway 69 in Greenville. The session is not only expected to address transportation in the future, but air quality issues as well.
The NCTCOG is responsible for developing multi-modal transportation plans for the MPA, an area that currently includes Collin, Dallas, Denton, Tarrant and Rockwall counties as well as adjacent parts of Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman and Parker counties. The MPA boundary is federally required to include existing urban areas and any adjacent areas expected to be urbanized in the next 20 years.
During the meeting, representatives with the NCTCOG intend to discuss recommendations for a larger planning boundary, to include Hunt County, based on expected population growth and travel data.
The agency expects twice as many people to be living in Hunt County in 2030. In 2000, according to the NCTCOG, an estimated 31 percent of Hunt County workers commuted to the five core counties.
