City Council to award services agreements for Safe Routes to School

GREENVILLE — It should be easier and safer in the future for children to walk or ride bikes to four of Greenville’s elementary schools.

The City Council is scheduled Tuesday to authorize professional services agreements with a Dallas company to come up with plans for new sidewalks under the Safe Routes to School Project.

The Council intends to award the contracts to Pacheco Koch Consulting Engineers during Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

During the summer of 2010, the Council entered into an advance funding agreement the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Grant, after the city was notified that four projects were selected for the program, with more than $1.87 million in grant funding going to pay for the work at Bowie, Carver, Crockett and Lamar elementary schools.

The project is expected to provide new sidewalks, repairs to existing sidewalks, curb cuts for ramps, the construction of curbs and gutters, crossings, traffic control devices and drainage. It is believed the improvements will result in more children walking and bicycling to and from the schools.

Tuesday, the Council intends to award lump sum agreements totaling $177,000 to Pacheco Koch, said to be the most qualified of eight firms who submitted qualifications on the project.
