Attorney appointed for suspect in firefighter assault

GREENVILLE — An attorney has been appointed for a Hunt County man, charged with trying to run over firefighters who were attempting to save his home last month.

William Alton Easterling, 70, of West Tawakoni, remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $35,000 bond, charged with two counts aggravated assault against a public servant.

An attorney was appointed for Easterling during a Monday morning hearing in the 354th District Court. Judge Richard A. Beacom scheduled a second hearing in the case for Wednesday.

Easterling was taken into custody after he allegedly attacked personnel responding to a fire at his residence.

Firefighters responded on the night of November 24 to a call of a structure fire at Easterling’s home on Ideal Circle in West Tawakoni. Easterling, 70, was arrested after he was accused of attempting to run over fire personnel that were working to bring the fire under control.

Aggravated assault against a public servant is a first degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison.
