Jury gets case in child abuse trial

GREENVILLE — A jury in the 196th District Court has received the case to begin deliberating guilt or innocence in the trial of Trevor Copeland, charged with one count of injury to a child by an act in connection with a December 2011 incident in which the 2 year-old daughter of his girlfriend was severely injured. Copeland pleaded not guilty to the indictment.

The jury received the case shortly after 4 p.m. today.

Should they find Copeland guilty, the panel is expected to be called back to the court tomorrow to consider a potential punishment, which could range up to life in prison.
