Authorities want to seize funds found in suitcase

GREENVILLE — If you happen to have been riding a bus in Hunt County in late November, and came up missing a suitcase containing your clothes, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office is currently holding it for you.

But if you want it back, investigators want to know what you were planning to do with the $280,000 in cash which was also inside the luggage.

The Hunt County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to seize the funds as contraband connected to narcotics trafficking and has filed a motion with the 354th District Court.

According to a criminal complaint filed as part of the suit, investigators with the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office and Caddo Mills Police Department boarded a Greyhound Bus, stopped at the Shell Station on Interstate 30 West in Caddo Mills, on the evening of Nov. 29, 2012.

The officers reportedly identified themselves and asked the passengers if they had any knowledge of drugs or cash connected to illegal drugs on board the bus.

One of the investigators reportedly noticed a blue suitcase — with no name, address, telephone number, baggage slip or any other identification —  in the storage compartment. No one on the bus claimed the luggage and therefore it was designated as abandoned property.

The Caddo Mills K-9 officer alerted on the suitcase for the possible presence of drugs. Inside the case the investigators allegedly discovered some men’s clothes and 24 wrapped bundles containing a total of $279,960 in cash.

Citations were issued Jan. 7,  but a trial date had not been set in the case as of Friday.
