Striving to improve access to transportation

GREENVILLE — Area government and business leaders took time this week to consider how to better provide access to transportation for all area residents.

Representatives from the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) hosted the Access North Texas program inside the Fletcher Warren Civic Center in Greenville Monday.

In attendance were officials from more than a dozen human service agencies, city and county governments officials and transportation providers.

Sarah Chadderdon, Transportation Planner with the NCTCOG, said the meeting was one of the steps in the ongoing effort to better coordinate public, human service and community transportation across the 16-county North Central Texas region.

Chadderdon said the purpose of the session was to hear from the officials as to what was currently available, and how to better utilize them.

“We’re very much focused on coordinating existing services,” Chadderdon said. “We’re focused on accessibility to life’s basic activities.”

Chadderdon said the NCTCOG is expected to release a final plan early next year, with the emphasis on identifying transportation needs and resources in the region, while also identifying and selecting solutions.

“That includes specific solutions for each county in the region,” she said.

One of the needs which have been identified in Hunt County was a way to improve access to employment in other areas within the region.

“We do know more than 60 percent of the people in Hunt County are traveling out of the county for work,” Chadderdon said.
