Adding some nostalgia to yule parade

GREENVILLE — One of the floats in this year’s downtown Greenville Christmas parade is expected to feature a nostalgic piece of the city’s history.

Studio A Dance Company, which last year displayed some of the horses which once belonged at the old carousel in Graham Park, has even bigger plans for the entry Friday’s event.

“We’ve reconditioned the train,” said Chance Davis. “We’re going to have them riding the train on the float this year. It is going to have the engine and one of the passenger cars.”

As was the case with the carousel horses, the miniature train which used to run through the park is being refurbished by Chance’s father, Larry Davis.

“That’s the one thing everybody remembers, is the train,” Davis said.

The annual downtown Christmas parade starts at 7 p.m. Friday, with the theme of “A Storybook Christmas.”

Pre-parade music will be offered by the Phoenix Charter School, starting at 6 p.m. on the North Steps of the Hunt County Courthouse.

The grand marshal for the parade will be 2011 Greenville Worthy Citizen Al Swanson. Dozens of vehicles, marching bands, floats and equestrian entries will begin the parade at the corner of Bois D’ Arc and Lee Streets; then travel west on Lee Street; south on Wright Street; east on Washington Street and finish at Stonewall Street, turning south to exit downtown.

Plaques will be presented for the Grand Marshal’s Award for First Place overall, the Mayor’s Award for Second Place overall, the Parade Theme Award, the Spirit of Christmas Award and the Automobile Award.

No entry fee is required to participate in the parade; however, all floats must have holiday lighting and all entrants must be pre-registered  at www.ci.greenville.tx.us/parade.
