GEUS board to address cable networks in system

GREENVILLE — Subscribers to the premium Spanish language channels under the GEUS cable television system may have noticed there are a few less channels to choose from.

As such, the GEUS board of trustees intends this week to reduce the cost of the programming package.

GEUS will also be keeping A&E and Lifetime on its cable system, even though the channels are expected to cost the utility a little more than planned.

The board is scheduled to meet for its regular session, starting at 6 p.m. Thursday in the GEUS Operations Center at 6000 Joe Ramsey Boulevard in Greenville.

In a memo to the board, GEUS Consumer Marketing Specialist Cory Hogan noted GEUS recently lost its HITS (Headend in the Sky) transmission feed to nine channels in the Diversion Spanish Language premium service package.

“Before the loss of the transmission, GEUS charged $6.50 per month for the service of the Diversion package which included a total of fourteen channels,” Hogan said. “After losing nine of the channels in the package, staff reviewed the programming fees and discovered it would be beneficial to GEUS customers to change the rate structure.”

Hogan is recommending GEUS now charge $2 per month for the Diversion package.

GEUS obtains some of its programming from the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC).

Hogan said the NCTC recently completed a renewal of the A&E-Lifetime Entertainment Services Television Networks which affects eight of GEUS’ existing networks.

“Staff believes that the recently negotiated A&E-Lifetime Entertainment Services Television Networks Agreement to be the least cost alternative available to GEUS,” Hogan said.

Even so, the agreement will result in a overall increase of 1 percent over what GEUS had included in the current budget.
