City employee honored as hero
GREENVILLE — A City of Greenville employee received a standing ovation during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, where he was hailed as a hero for saving the life of a man whose pickup had become submerged in the pond at Graham Park.
Mayor Tom Oliver read from a proclamation honoring Ronnie Johnson for his effort.
“Ronnie is a fine example of the high quality employees the city has,” Oliver said.
Johnson didn’t take credit for being a hero, however, instead giving credit to a high authority.
“I was just thank God I was there at that time,” Johnson said.
Johnson, who works in the Water Utility Division, was visiting the park on the evening of January 31 when he noticed a blue Chevrolet pickup truck driving erratically and enter the pond. Johnson called 911 then went to the truck where he saw an older man open the door and step into waist-deep water. Johnson pulled the man out of the pond, contacted the individual’s son and stayed until police, fire and ambulance units arrived on the scene.
Johnson said God was with him that night.
“I’ve got to give Him the glory,” Johnson said, adding he was concerned about the possibility of snakes in the pond. “It was really scary that night. It was really scary.”
Oliver said Johnson, a 15-year employee with the City of Greenville was also instrumental in foiling a recent attempted burglary at the city’s Service Center a few weeks ago.
