GREENVILLE —
Commissioners are slated to consider and possibly accept the redistricting of Hunt County political boundaries, including new boundaries for the Commissioners Court precincts during a special meeting today.
The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Auxiliary Courtroom, located at 2700 Johnson.
Redistricting occurs every 10 years following the release of the United States Census Redistricting is intended to take into account a variety of demographic changes, including population shifts.
The county has partnered with Allison, Bass & Associates, L.L.P. to draft the new boundaries. Commissioners have received periodic presentations regarding the process from Bob Bass.
Redistricting is required in Hunt County, including commissioner precincts, due to the deviation in population in the county’s four precincts.
Commissioners met with Bass following the June 27 Commissioners Court meeting to discuss redistricting proposals.
According to the 2010 Census, there were 86,129 residents in the county. With four commissioner precincts, the ideal precinct size following redistricting will have a population of 21,532.
Of the four commissioner precincts, Precinct 2, which encompasses the southwest portion of the county, was the most populous with 27,306 residents (31.7 percent).
Precinct 1, which comprises the Northwestern portion of the county, was the second most populous precinct with 23,011 residents (26.72 percent).
Precinct 3, which comprises southeast Hunt County, had a population of 23,623 (23.94 percent).
Precinct 4, which includes the northeast portion of the county, was the least populated precinct with 15, 189 residents (17.64 percent).
The easiest and most common way to adjust boundaries is to do so in densely populated areas where precincts meet. In Hunt County, many of the boundary changes will likely occur in and around the City of Greenville, which is centrally located in the county.
A redistricting proposal must be sent to the Department of Justice by early August.
