Testimony starts in game room robbery trial

GREENVILLE — A Grayson County man is facing multiple charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault, in connection with a 2010 armed hold-up of a Hunt County game room and a shootout with a Hunt County Sheriff’s deputy.

Opening arguments and the start of testimony are scheduled in the 196th District Court this morning for Darreus Demont Williams of Van Alstyne, who is being tried on three counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated assault against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Williams is facing a maximum sentence of up to life in prison on four of the counts.

Jury selection was conducted Monday.

Three additional indictments of aggravated robbery, which had been filed against Williams, were dismissed Monday.

Williams has pleaded not guilty.

Williams’ alleged co-actor, Guadalupe Ramirez III, was convicted by a jury last fall and was sentenced to prison.

Williams and Ramirez allegedly acted alongside Vincent Thomas of Greenville on the night of Feb. 20, 2010 during the armed hold-up of the Bonnie Lou’s Game Room on State Highway 276.

The indictments indicate Williams was convicted in Collin County in 2007 for delivery of a controlled substance.

Thomas was shot and killed during a gun battle with a Hunt County Sheriff’s deputy following a chase which ended at the Greenville city limits.
