Domestic violence awareness events set

GREENVILLE — Women In Need will be bringing Domestic Violence Awareness Month to a close with a fashion show this evening and a candlelight vigil Tuesday evening.

The inaugural “Mary Kay Rocks the Runway” Fashion Show is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Best Western Monica Royale, 3001 Mustang Crossing.

State Senator Robert F. “Bob” Deuell is scheduled to present a proclamation in recognition of Women In Need and Mary Kay’s efforts to help reduce the incidents of domestic violence. Tickets for the event are $10, with 20 percent of all proceeds going to Women In Need.

A candlelight vigil will conclude local activities for the month, starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the north side of the Hunt County Courthouse.

The theme for this year’s observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month is “Even 1 is 2 Many”, and officials with Women In Need have said the events are being conducted in remembrance of the tragic death last summer of Stella Michelle “Doc” Ray, whose estranged husband was charged with capital murder in connection with her death.

Women In Need assists the local victims of domestic violence through a variety of services, from emergency shelter care, a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, support and accompaniment through the legal system, aftercare, assistance with clothing and household needs, as well as job training and referrals.

Those wanting additional information can contact Michelle Lee, Community Education Coordinator with Women In Need, at 903-455-4612.
