Unusual traffic

To the editor:

There is now street work going on at Wesley Street and the Loop.  This work is causing traffic to back up on both the loop and Wesley Street. Because of this backup and perhaps other reasons, the drivers in Greenville have sought other routes to get where they want to go. This causes unusually high traffic on normally low-traffic streets in Greenville.

For instance, when my wife and I went out on Friday, March 2,  at 1 p.m. from our house on Utah street, we went south to Canton, then east to Sayle Street. When we got to Sayle, we found that southbound traffic on Sayle Street had backed up from the stop sign at Sayle and Eastland streets all the way back to Canton.

At 4 p.m. the same day, a large amount of traffic was using Utah Street going both north and south — apparently to go around some or all of the backup on Sayle Street! The traffic was going all the way down to Nashville Street, then turning toward Sayle or going over to Nevada Street.

This traffic was about 10 times as much as usually occurs on Utah Street and the quiet neighborhoods it was going through.

I would like to ask all drivers using this route to take extra care, slow down, and stay alert when driving through our neighborhood and when using any streets that are primarily residential.

There are parked cars, dogs, squirrels, children, and unfamiliar streets and signs to watch out for. Please keep alert — this is not your usual route and you may be surprised by what happens.

By the way, if you slow down, you won’t hit the big dip in the road at Canton and Utah streets hard enough to damage your car!

  • Vote for new Y

I write to support the YMCA bond election from a perspective of the role they provide in the health of our community. As a health care professional, I have long understood and supported the need and development of a comprehensive Health and Wellness Center which could serve not only as a fitness center and playground, but as a cornerstone for building and maintaining healthy bodies and lifestyles.

A number of Greenville citizens have asked if we can afford a new YMCA. After many years of being a part of the Y, I think the question is, can we afford not to build a new YMCA?
