To the editor:
After reading the beastiality headline that has no doubt startled our community, I felt somewhat compelled to respond in kind by asking, “what are we accomplishing by printing this?” Having served as a law enforcement officer here for ten years, I can attest that there are many things that go on in this community that our citizens do not know, and honestly are better off not knowing about. As parents we decide on what to censor our kids from, and it does not always work out in our favor with respect to timing. And when it doesn’t, we have to be ready to explain in some fashion.
The majority of our citizens read the paper for local interests and sometimes, yes, for entertainment. What I believe you, The Banner, failed to recognize is that our citizens also come in small packages. Students used the local paper for projects and curriculum studies in class. I know for a fact that at least a classroom of GISD students received and read the front page of the paper that day and teachers were forced to deal with that situation.
That was unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Although our constitution allows you to print such articles, answer these questions to yourself: 1. Is it our desire to be censored in our own school system? 2. Is this must report material? 3. Is this respectable journalism? Without being overly critical about why the caption wasn’t edited, I put the ball in your (Banner) hands to rectify the problem. If you care about the kids in this community and the parents and teachers that had to clean up your mess, then I respectfully ask you (Banner) to submit an apology and/or explanation to the public. After all, it is our 75 cents you used to print it with.

I write to support the YMCA bond election from a perspective of the role they provide in the health of our community. As a health care professional, I have long understood and supported the need and development of a comprehensive Health and Wellness Center which could serve not only as a fitness center and playground, but as a cornerstone for building and maintaining healthy bodies and lifestyles.

I was born and raised in Greenville and have lived here most of my life, except for the two years my husband, Perry M. Smith, was in dental school and the two years he practiced dentistry in West Texas.
