Dewhurst stumps for Deuell
GREENVILLE — Lt. Governor David Dewhurst came to the hometown of State Senator Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) Wednesday night, to voice his support for the Republican incumbent.
“This fellow is a champion,” Dewhurst told the audience inside the Fletcher Warren Civic Center during one of a handful of campaign stops through Texas Senate District 2 in North Texas.
Deuell is seeking the GOP nomination for the office in the March 2 primary, and is facing Sharon Russell of Rowlett.
The winner will face Democrat Kathleen Maria Shaw from Cedar Hill in November.
Deuell introduced Dewhurst, noting they both joined the Texas Legislature in 2003.
“We have worked together through four regular sessions and eight special sessions,” Deuell said, crediting Dewhurst for providing the leadership which resulted in the State of Texas having a budget surplus at the end of the 2009 session.
“We have about $9 billion in the bank,” Deuell said. “We are in a very enviable position compared to other states.”
Dewhurst in turn thanked Deuell for sponsoring the Jessica’s Law legislation in the Texas Senate in 2007, which resulted in some of the toughest laws in the country concerning sex offenders. Dewhurst also noted how Deuell fought for fiscal responsibility.
“He is a fine conservative,” Dewhurst said. “He is a soldier and a champion for keeping taxes low.”
